When Are Taxes Due After Extension

Tax Season Countdown: Automatic Extension Deadline Approaching

File or Request an Extension by April 18th

WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reminds taxpayers that the deadline to file their 2023 tax returns or request an automatic extension is approaching. The deadline for both tasks is Tuesday, April 18, 2023.

Individual taxpayers, regardless of their income level, who do not owe taxes can request an automatic extension by using the IRS Free File service. Free File is available on the IRS website and allows taxpayers to prepare and file their federal tax returns electronically for free.

To request an extension, taxpayers must file Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. The form can be filed electronically or by mail. Taxpayers can also request an extension by phone by calling the IRS at (800) 848-8193.

It's important to note that an extension of time to file a return does not grant an extension of time to pay taxes owed. Taxpayers should estimate and pay any taxes due by April 18th to avoid penalties and interest.

For more information on the tax filing extension deadline, visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov/filing.
