Total Solar Eclipse 2024: A Guide to the Great American Eclipse
What is a Total Solar Eclipse?
A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and the Earth, blocking out the Sun's light. This creates a brief moment of total darkness during which the Sun's corona, or outer atmosphere, becomes visible.
When and Where to See the 2024 Eclipse
The 2024 solar eclipse will be a total eclipse visible across most of North America. The path of totality, where the total eclipse will be visible, will stretch from Mexico to Canada.
The eclipse will begin in Mexico at 9:18 AM CST and end in Canada at 11:40 AM EST. The maximum eclipse point, where the Moon completely blocks out the Sun, will occur over Texas at 10:19 AM CST.
Partial Solar Eclipse
Even if you are not in the path of totality, you will still be able to see a partial solar eclipse. A partial solar eclipse occurs when the Moon partially blocks out the Sun. This will be visible in the majority of the United States.
Safety Precautions
Looking directly at the Sun during an eclipse can cause serious eye damage. Always use solar eclipse glasses or a pinhole projector to view the eclipse safely.
